Not a day goes by where I don't see a site that isn't using their images properly. Most people already know but as a reminder the search engines cannot see your beautiful pictures. What they can read is any ALT information that you provide for that image tag. Now is the time to focus your keywords into your image ALT descriptions. You can use virtually any ALT information you would like. If someone has images turned off in the browsers then they will only see the ALT information. It is important to accurately describe the image and still optimize your description around your keywords...
Just as you can properly optimize your site you can also incorrectly optimize the ALT information at the same time. I always preach to 'think of your end user'. Would the information you are using benefit them? or is it only written to game the seach engines. Obvious keyword stuffing can get you punished or black listed by the major search engines. I try to keep ALT information quick and concise depending on the width of the image. If the image is really small you will not be able to see any of the information anyway. Be sure to include the most important information first. So if your site is about Web Development and you have a header graphic you would assign ALT information like:
<img src="path.jpg" width="300px" height="150px" alt="American Web Developer for Hire Banner" /> The important thing to take away from this article is to take advantage of search engine optimization any time you can to benefit your visitors, your website and the Internet as a whole.
